Welcome to Rock Running
|
While not quite yet an Olympic sport, we now have lots of people actively involved in rock running, from Australia to China, and South Africa to North America! If you also like to run on rocks and have found our site, please email us at feedback@rockrunning.com to tell us your experiences. We'd love to hear from you and welcome you to the community!
This site was built after a Google search for "rock running" brought up a bunch of weirdos that run around under the water holding rocks, which in our opinion should be called "aqua rock holding". We built this site as a beacon for all the cool people in the world who actually like to run ON rocks, as opposed to carrying them around underwater. |
Why Run on Rocks?Running across jagged dangerous terrain is something that we as a species enjoy. While our sample is still small, it seems that everyone who is in reasonable shape, and tries rock running finds it to be exhilarating, focusing, fluid and enormously fun.
Rock running increases cardiovascular endurance while building muscle, toning your body, and giving you laser like focus. There's nothing like the possibility of shattering your tibia into uncountable pieces to give you the ability to concentrate for hours at a time! |

Where can I Run on Rocks?Help us figure this out! We're in the process of building a catalog of places on Google maps that allows you to zoom out to find your closest location. At the moment we have three tested rock running spots, check out the maps page to see them all in detail.

How do I Run on Rocks? When rock running, you need to continuously scan back and forth at least two steps ahead as your momentum will hurtle you forward into places you don't necessarily want to go, or into obstacles you don't necessarily want to hit.
While training, if you find your concentration is wandering, you will break your legs and/or face. Rather than visit the ER / causalty, it is far better to stop, have a rest, and regain composure. The same can be said for fatigue. The moment you feel that your foot-falls are not accurately placed due to fatigue, stop, rest, and remember that your legs are a critical piece of who you are. Disclaimer: Running on rocks at high speed is quite dangerous, and while the current injury rate is zero and therefore statistically safer than flying, it probably won't stay that way. We would recommend you don't run on rocks if you want to be "fracture free". |
What do I need to Run on Rocks? You will most definitely need a Rock Running t-shirt :) It will tell the world that you're not an asylum escapee and are in fact part of the worlds slowest growing sport.
Apart from that, very little is required for rock running. That being said, it is fun to run in a pair of Vibram FiveFingers running shoes. If you haven't run 'barefoot' before it is highly advisable to train for a few weeks in the shoes before trying rock running, as your arches, calf muscles, and surrounding stabilizers will almost certainly not be strong enough to take the strain. Start out by wearing your Vibram shoes around the house, then walking in them for no more than an hour a day for a week. Then a gentle jog of 20 minutes and build up from there. For more information, have a look at the biomechanics page at Vibram's site. While rock running, make sure your shoes fit well. There can be no room inside the shoe for your foot to move around. Your feet will get sweaty while running and the increased slide can lead to sprained ankles when landing on angled rocks if your shoes don't prevent this movement. Always be sure to tighten your shoes before you run. If your Vibram shoes have Velcro, do them up extra tight to reduce slippage inside your shoes. |
